Free Online Korean Language Lessons Offered by the Korean Education Center of the Korean Consulate General of New York!

Also-Known-As is excited to announce that the Korean Education Center of the Korean Consulate General of NY will, for the first time, offer online Korean language classes at both the beginner and intermediate levels in an intensive summer program. Classes will be held twice-weekly via Zoom, starting May 25 or 26 through June 24 or 25. The Korean Consulate General of NY is offering these classes for FREE to residents of NY, NJ, PA, CT, and DE, in order to give back to the region during this challenging time!

Registration is free and closes Friday, May 22, 2020, or when the classes are full. See the registration section at the bottom of this page for more information.    

Please be respectful of the teachers, Consulate General, and other potential students by only signing up if you are sure you can attend all the classes and can purchase the book in time.

Some classes start on Monday, May 25, which is a holiday; please consider this in your decision to enroll.

If you are not sure what level class you should take or have any questions, please review the following textbook samples and class descriptions to determine your level of competency. ***ACCEPTING ENROLLMENT FOR INTERMEDIATE II LEVEL CLASS ONLY; OTHER CLASSES ARE FULL***

  • Beginner I textbook sample

    • No prior knowledge of Korean is necessary. This class covers the Korean alphabet (Hangeul), basic grammar and essential expressions for basic conversation.

  • Beginner II textbook sample

    • Ability to read and write the alphabet and words (though you might not know the words’ meanings) is required. This class covers basic expression for everyday conversation including giving excuses, advice, making reservations, etc.

  • Intermediate I textbook sample

    • Students are expected to have studied Korean for at least one year or be comfortable speaking and writing simple phrases. This class covers intermediate-level Korean expressions including grammar and vocabulary to build a solid proficiency beyond an introductory understanding of Korean. Supplementary materials will be provided.

  • Intermediate II textbook sample

    • Students are expected to have studied Korean for at least one and a half years or be somewhat familiar to intermediate-level expressions of Korean. Students will be able to easily and confidently converse when dealing with routine tasks of the Intermediate Level. They will also be able to successfully handle essential tasks and social situations requiring an exchange of basic information related to their work, recreation, particular interests, and areas of competence. Supplementary materials will be provided.

INSTRUCTION

Instructor Jun Choi (최용준) will teach Beginner 1. He received his M.A. in comparative linguistics in Korean and Japanese languages from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Yongjun Choi lived in Japan from 2001-2011 and taught Korean language at private language schools in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. He is currently an adjunct Korean language instructor at LaGuardia Community College, the Korea Society, and New York University. He used to work at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Columbia University as a TA. He has taught a wide range of Korean/Japanese levels, ranging from beginner to early-advanced.

Instructor Jeehyun Kim (김지현) will teach the Beginner 2 class. She received her M.A. in Cognitive Science, specializing in non-native speech perception, from Seoul National University, Korea. She earned a Korean language teacher certificate after completing the Korean Language Teachers Training Program at Language Education Institute of Seoul National University, Korea. Afterwards, she continued her studies and earned a second M.A. in Applied Linguistics from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently teaching Korean at New York University and Queens College of the City University of New York.

Beom Lee (이범) will teach the Intermediate class. He has his B.A. and M.A. in sociology from Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, and his M.A. and Ed.M. in Instructional Technology and Media, with a specialization in second language learning with multimedia from Teachers College, Columbia University. Lee has taught all levels (First to Fifth Year) of Korean classes at Columbia University since 2005 and AKA Korean language classes since 2011. Lee has also helped local Korean language institutions in the Korean-American community. His research interests include technology-enhanced language learning, second language acquisition, and cognitive science.

Beginner Korean Level I

Beginner Korean I Class will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:30pm - 8:30pm for 5 weeks between May 25 and June 24, 2020. No prior knowledge of Korean is necessary.

Beginner Korean Level II

Beginner Korean II Class will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30pm - 8:30pm for 5 weeks between May 26 and June 25, 2020.  Ability to read and write the alphabet and words (though you might not know the word meanings) is required.

You must obtain the course book by the first week: Active Korean 2, Seoul National University Language Education Institute, Moojinmedia

Intermediate Korean Level I

Class Structure and Information

Classes will cover reading, writing, listening, conversation and grammar in a fun and dynamic environment. Korean language teaching materials will include textbooks, practice worksheets, grammar guides and vocabulary lists.

COSTS AND REGISTRATION

The Korean Education Center is sponsoring Korean language classes for Also-Known-As. Classes this semester are free, though you will be responsible for purchasing your own textbook.

Classes are open to the public; you do not need to be a member take this class. You must be a resident of one of the states served by the Korean Consulate General of New York, which include New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware.

You are encouraged to sign up early to ensure that your space is reserved. Class seats are available on a first come first serve basis and are only secured once you have received a confirmation email.

Cancellation Policy

Students may cancel their registration, and are encouraged to do so before May 25 to allow availability for others in the course.

All classes are held online via Zoom. You must have a device and internet connection that can run Zoom.
