Affordable Online Korean Language Lessons Offered by the Korean Education Center of the Korean Consulate General of New York

Also-Known-As is excited to announce that the Korean Education Center of the Korean Consulate General of NY will again offer Korean language classes during the spring semester!

All classes will be held over 15 weeks, online via Zoom, starting the week of March 7 and running to June 17. Registration is open to residents of NY, NJ, PA, CT, and DE.

Regular Classes will be held once a week from 6:30pm - 8:30pm ET, and registration is NOW OPEN for an incredible rate of $100. The new Certificate Course will meet twice a week, from 6:30pm - 8:30pm ET, and registration is $200. Note that receiving the certificate requires completion of an in-person test in NYC after the end of the semester, but all are welcome to take this accelerated program.

Korean Language Online Class

The Korean Education Center is sponsoring Korean language classes for Also-Known-As at the very special rate of $100. You are responsible for purchasing your own textbook and have it delivered to you in time for class. See the textbook section below for more details.

Classes are open to the public; you do not need to be a member of Also-Known-As to take this class. You must be a resident of one of the states served by the Korean Consulate General of New York, which include New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and Delaware. Students must also be high school age or older.

Registration

Registration will close Wednesday, March 1, or when full.  Students must pre-register by selecting the class, clicking “Add to Cart”, and completing checkout, above. If you have any questions or problems registering, please email language@alsoknownas.org.

You are encouraged to sign up early to ensure that your space is reserved and enough materials are prepared. Class seats are available on a first come first serve basis and are only secured once you have received a confirmation email. Some classes may be canceled if a minimum number of students do not register; you will receive a full refund in that case.

Cancellation Policy

Any class including the certificate class can be canceled if registration is not high enough, at the consulate's decision. Anyone who was registered would receive a 100% refund.

Students may cancel their registration and receive a full refund (minus Paypal processing fees) if cancellation notice is received prior to the first class. Students may receive a 50% refund (minus Paypal processing fees) if registration is cancelled immediately after the first class. Unfortunately, we cannot offer partial refunds for any missed classes or any refunds for cancellations on or after the second class.

Textbooks & Course Location

The required textbook is listed in the class description. You are responsible for purchasing your own book and having it delivered in time. Some books are used by 2 levels, so you might be able to re-use your book if you have purchased before.

We believe Han Books is the lowest cost US supplier of the books used in our classes, though we do not otherwise have any connection or knowledge of this store. See Active Korean. Some of the Active Korean books have a Workbook version - it is not required unless explicitly stated otherwise in the class description.

Class Location

All classes are held online via Zoom. You must have a device and internet connection that can run Zoom, in addition to a quiet work space where you can participate without distraction to yourself, instructor, or fellow students. The certificate program test will be in-person in NYC after the end of the semester.

Class Descriptions

Korean 1 (Certificate Course)

This is an accelerated course that encompasses the full Level 1 (i.e., 1A and 1B), which are listed below. It will meet twice a week and progress at twice the rate. To receive the certificate, students must pass an on-site test in NYC after at the end of the semester and attended > 70% of instruction hours. The date and time of the exam is to be determined, most likely after the semester starts with student input. The certificate will be issued by the Korean Education Center of the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in New York. As an official certificate issued by the Korean government, it can be used as proof of Korean proficiency for jobs or visas that would require it. All are welcome to take this accelerated course, even if they do not plan to test for the certificate.

Korean 1A

No prior knowledge of Korean is necessary. This course is for beginners of Korean and aims to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Korean. Students will learn Korean pronunciation, basic grammar and vocabulary. The Korean script (한글 Hangeul) will be introduced from the beginning of the course. Also, students will learn how to express themselves at restaurants, and stores.

Korean 1B

Ability to read and write the alphabet and words (though you might not know the words’ meanings) is required. An ultimate goal of this course is to establish a base to communicate with Korean speakers on a daily basis. Students will build up more expressions, vocabulary and grammar from Level 1-1. Also, students will learn basic daily conversation skills such as making appointments, asking and giving locations, and making phone conversations.

Korean 2A

Students are expected to have studied Korean for at least one semester or understand and use familiar everyday expressions including introducing oneself, asking directions, and ordering food. Using the first half of Active Korean 2, this class covers basic expressions including giving a reason and talking about future plans.

Korean 2B

Students are expected to have studied Korean for at least two semester or have a basic knowledge of grammatical structures, including different tenses, and be able to produce sentences and formulate -- and respond to -- everyday questions. Using the second half of Active Korean 2, students will learn to express and understand more complicated expressions such as ability, prohibition, permission, and suggestion.

Korean 3A (fall) or 3B (spring)

This course aims to improve learners’ speaking ability in Korean by incorporating vocabulary and grammatical structures covered in Beginning-level courses.

Korean 4A (fall) or 4B (spring)

Through various conversational activities, learners will be able to improve pronunciation and comprehension, expand vocabulary, and improve fluency.

Textbook: No required textbook.

Instruction

Instructor Jun Choi (최용준) will teach Korean 1. He received his M.A. in comparative linguistics in Korean and Japanese languages from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Yongjun Choi lived in Japan from 2001-2011 and taught Korean language at private language schools in Kyoto, Osaka, and Tokyo. He is currently an adjunct Korean language instructor at LaGuardia Community College, the Korea Society, and New York University. He used to work at the Fashion Institute of Technology, and Columbia University as a TA. He has taught a wide range of Korean/Japanese levels, ranging from beginner to early-advanced.

Instructor Jiyeon Kim (김지연) will teach 1A section 1. She received her M.A. in Early Childhood Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. Kim has taught all levels to Korean classes since 2014. She is currently teaching Korean at Columbia University, Brooklyn College and the Korea Society.

Instructor Haeran Song (송혜란) will teach 1A Section 2 and 1B. She earned her B.A. in comparative literature and Korean studies at Stony Brook University. Then she pursued her graduate study in TESOL and earned M.A. at Stony Brook University in 2006. She is a teacher at New York City Department of Education who has been teaching for more than 10 years. Currently, she is teaching Korean to both non-heritage and heritage students at Bayside High School. She has been teaching Korean to second and third generations of Korean-Americans at Hyo Shin Korean School for more than seven years.

Instructor Michael Huh (허 욱) will teach 2A. He received his B.A. in Linguistics and M.A. in Economics from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea. Then he earned his J.D. at Northwestern University, admitted to the New York State Bar and remains in good standing. Mr. Huh has taught Korean language at National University of Kyiv, Kyiv, Ukraine, and is currently teaching Korean at Nassau Community College

Instructor Eunmee Yoon (윤은미) will teach 2B and 3B. She received her M.A. in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language and her Ph.D. in Korean Language and Literature from Yonsei University in Seoul, Korea. She taught Korean at all levels at the Korean Language Institute of Yonsei University. She is currently teaching Korean at Queens College, City University of New York.

Instructor Beom Lee (이범) will teach 4B. He received his M.A. in sociology from Hanyang University, Seoul, Korea, and his M.A. and Ed.M. in Instructional Technology and Media, with a specialization in second language learning with multimedia from Teachers College, Columbia University. Lee has taught all levels (First to Fifth Year) of Korean classes at Columbia University since 2005 and AKA Korean language classes since 2011. Lee has also helped local Korean language institutions in the Korean-American community. His research interests include technology-enhanced language learning, second language acquisition, and cognitive science.
